Rob Murray brass, piano and theory teacher

At what age did you begin learning your instrument? 

I started the violin when I was 6, followed by the trumpet at 7. I started piano when I was 12.

Where did you study? 

I studied a BA Hons Degree in Musical Performance and Instrumental Teaching at Chichester University.​

 

Who do you currently play for? 

I freelance in many different pit orchestras so I have the pleasure of meeting lots of people as well as getting to play in many different venues. I play trumpet in The VivaTones function band and I also hold the position of Musical Director for Lichfield Garrick Youth Musical Company, South Staffs Musical Theatre Company, Mary Stevens Hospice Pantomime Company, Harlequin Pantomimes and The Mellow Dramatics.

Please tell us more about your music experiences. 

Since I was 15, I have been playing for different musicals. I have also played for different orchestras such as The High Peak Symphony, Edwin James Festival Orchestra, Chichester Symphony Orchestra, Staffordshire Festival Orchestra and the Musique-Cordiale International Festive Orchestra and Opera Orchestra. I am an adjudicator for the Enkor International Academy of Performing Arts and Sciences.

Have you performed on TV and Radio? 

Whilst studying at Chichester I had the pleasure of recording for the Ford Transit Van advert. I have also featured on BBC Shropshire and Radio Derby.

​

Apart from music, what other hobbies do you have? 

Music is a major part of my life when I get the chance, I like to take part in kayaking expeditions/holidays. I am also partial to port tasting - I like to think of myself as a port connoisseur!

​

If you had one piece of advice for music students, what would it be? 

Take all the opportunities that are available and never stop wanting to broaden your knowledge.
